The Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center is conducting a land cover, snow cover and change mapping project in southwest and central Wyoming with funding from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) and in-kind support from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Forest Service (USFS), Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and others. Landsat ETM+ and TM satellite data along with ancillary spatial data are being used to accomplish three primary tasks:
  1. Land cover mapping over this large region with an emphasis on shrub vegetation communities

  2. Snow cover mapping representing late season snow cover for two winter scenarios (normal vs. heavy snow years)

  3. Change detection on 5-year intervals from the present to the advent of the Landsat TM satellite in 1984. The project timeline calls for the completion of the SW Wyoming products by December 2006 and central Wyoming products by December 2007. All land cover products will be assessed for classification accuracy using field reference data.
